I was thinking more of the offset/width table, but didn't want to go
into too much detail (and didn't have the manual handy to refresh my
memory).
In addition to the 255-pixel width limit, there are also some upper
limits on the size of the various tables, mainly due to internal
limitations in the Font Manager (which were relaxed to some extent
at some point after System 5.0, allowing font files larger than 64K, for
example).
