A Proposal...
I was just wondering how willing people would be for an update to
System 6.01? It's probably not going to happen, at least for
awhile...that is, unless WE do something about it. Taking the Apple
///'s new operating system as an example, why don't we pool some money
and hire a programmer or too to do a little bug fixing and enhancements
to the GS's system software? Granted, there are legal problems w/Apple
and stuff like that, but it would be nice to have some plan rather than
wait for an enternity for something that probably won't ever see light.
Would people be interested in pooling money for a project like
this? I would be willing to donate say $20 (at the most) to a cause like
this. However, we would need someone we could trust with the $$$ and
also someone who has a little recognition in the GS community to pull it
off. I was kinda thinking someone like Joe Kohn could do this (isn't
Brutal Deluxe supposedly working on the update themselves). With his
ties to them and a little extra incentive to get the job done ($$$) maybe
would could get a upgrade to the OS? With ShareWare Solutions II, he
could broadcast this deal with a lot of GS owners. Just an idea I guess
(what do you expect @ 3 in the morning?) :)
Oh, in case someone is working on the OS update behind our backs,
here's what I'd like to see:
* An MS-DOS FST that reads and writes MS-DOS disks. Also, what's
the deal about the SuperDrive Controller card having a bug in it when you
format a 720k floppy? I had to reboot to format a 1.44 meg disk after that.
Could this be fixed in a driver update or anything?
* A CD Remote NDA that works with ALL SCSI Cards & CD-ROM drives
via providing there is a driver in the System Folder. The Media
Controller is okay, but it could be better. Something like the Mac CD
Player appliation would be nice.
* Second Sight support for the Finder, Teach, Archiver, ect. I
don't know about you guys, but the main reason (besides money) why I
haven't bought a SS card yet is lack of software that uses it's
abilities. Wouldn't it be nice to have 256+ color icons in the Finder?
256+ color graphics in other applications (just some eye candy for the
powerful yet dull looking applications included with the OS).
* A little Control Panel or DA (preferrably Control Panel) that
acts like Apple's PC Exchange. It's kinda aggravating to copy text files
off of DOS disks and have those inversed ? at the front of each line.
(Anyone know of a simple PD utility that will strip that out?).
* A FinderExtra or built-in finder option to Rebuild the Desktop
database. I know this is kinda a nit-pick since a critter like this is
available as shareware and a commercial utility by EGO Systems, but I
think it should be integrated into the finder a little better.
* Have the Finder calculate the size of the files to copy before
it begins copying so it can warn you if the destination doesn't have
enough free space. Again, I believe an extension like this exists on
Quality Computer's Six Pack package, but... :)
* Any bugs in the OS that irritate GS Programmers and users. I'd
love to see GS/OS nice, compact, and bug free. Granted it is really good
now, but it could be great...
Thanks for reading the rantings of a fool @ 3 in the morning.
Just out of curiousity, what would other people like to see in this
fictional OS update? If anything, we can dream about it, I know I will...
