Actually, it is any slot below 4. The IIgs has a hardware facility for
automatically setting the CPU speed to slow if the disk motor is
turned on for a Disk ][ controller (or later derivative), but only if
the card is installed in slots 4 through 7 (this feature is enabled
separately for each slot, but there are only four bits available in the
byte which configures this feature).
If you only use the GS/OS drivers to access a 5.25" drive in slot 1-3,
it will handle the speed change for you. It is only a problem if you
access the drive from 8-bit software (or ProDOS-16, the predecessor of
GS/OS).
