You can "see" the Mac from the Apple IIgs when AppleTalk is set up correctly
on both, but you can't see the IIgs from the Mac. It doesn't really matter
if you just want to transfer files between the two. You do all your work
sittling at the IIgs - copy IIgs files by dragging to the Mac networked
volume (or hard drive), and copy Mac volumes from the networked volume by
dragging images to your Apple IIgs drive(s).
Of course, Apple had great wisdom in designing AppleTalk so that Macs were
used for what they were intended for: dumb file servers. They didn't think
anyone would want to make an Apple IIgs as a file server. It's too good for
that, and is intended as a productivity machine.
If AppleTalk is installed properly on your IIgs, then you should be able to
select it from Control Panels under the Apple menu, and open up your Mac
hard drive(s).
