That "garbage" is mousetext characters, a text set addition that 
is part of the enhancement kit.  To the best of my knowledge the 
only fix for it is to patch the program.  All-caps inverse text 
should look just fine, but flashing text and inverse lower-case 
text will be trashed.

FWIW Mousetext is nice to have in programs that support it, like 
ShrinkIt and Appleworks.
