I'll tell you what worked for me. Someone else would have to tell you 
_why_ it worked.

Before launching FastDATA Pro from the hard drive, I would launch (and 
immediately quit) Appleworks (not AWGS). Worked every time!

FastDATA is a great program. I could accumulate massive logs of 
messages, etc. and find what I wanted in no time at all. Does anyone 
know of a similar utility for the Mac, which I use occasionally now :)
