I fixed it myself!
Well, I was about this close (holding my thumb and first finger
_real_ close together) to posting this looking for some help. But
I was able to figure it out myself. Now I am just wondering if
anyone has seen anything like this or might know why it happened.
And, I am so happy with myself for figuring it out, I had to post
something.
It started out simple enough. I decided to play some solitaire
so I start up the game and it dies with a 1B08 error. So I check
it out and it is a font tool error, invalid font family. This
worked not two weeks ago.
I restore solitaire and the font tool from a backup and it still
doesn't help. So now I break out the big guns and decide to do
some serious poking around. I use GSBug to trap all the toolbox
calls that list 1B08 as a resulting error and find out that
InstallFont is what is dying. Also, AppleWorks GS and teach no
longer work for the same reason.
So, I move the Fonts folder to a temporary name and copy all the
fonts from my 6.0.1 install disks to a new Fonts folder. I reboot
and sure enough everything is OK. Now, I dread the task of going
through my fonts trying to find a bad file, but I have a stroke of
genius (well for me I guess). I delete the font.list file and reboot
with my original font folder in tact. Sure enough everything is
great after the system builds a new font.list file. I was so proud
of myself for sticking it out and getting it fixed within an hour.
Anyways, has anyone ever seen their 6.0.1 system do this? Oh,
something I didn't mention, shift booting didn't fix the problem
(it shouldn't if the font.list file is corrupted).
