Re: Re. Sun-Apple

Hey check out the web page at: http://www.exp.com/ to see about
the next generation of ppc chips. 300Mhz and 600Mhz.

BTW that figure of 40-50% better performance is an 'overall rating.

What does that mean? For example if you perform any task the time between
your click on the mouse, and the time the task is finished. The mac's slimmer
leaner OS wins this war over windows, the slight advantage the ppc gives
in ops (operations per second) over a pentium or a pentium pro isn't as
much of a factor..... yet. With the after market introduction of 300 and
600Mhz ppc's that might make a big difference.

Why ops and not mips? measure the actual operation done not the number of
times a second the cpu is accessed. The pentium chip can divide 2 numbers
in 6 or 8 chip accesses, the ppc takes almost twice as many. The ppc has muc
higher mips . The two factors balance out to slightly higher (10-15%) better
performance for the ppc. So the real battle is between OS's. When you click
the button to let your mac or your clone recalculate a huge spreadsheet,
the mac will win. Mostly because the behind the scenes speed on re-drawing
your screen, and not due to the actual calculating a spreadsheet!
