CHECKMATE MEMORY SAVER CARD: Info Request

I got a group of interface cards without manuals on a combo deal.  One of 
these cards is:

CHECKMATE TECHNOLOGY: MEMORY SAVER (1987)

This is a strange-looking card with a piggyback female card-socket ---- I 
guess that a RAM card should plug into the socket.....

Can anyone supply information about this card?  Is it for the IIgs or 
IIe?  What RAM cards are compatible with it?   How does it save memory 
---- it has no onboard batteries....   What does the card do?
