Hi folks,

(yay!) Unfortunately the PowerMac 8500 I used to have to serve as a
file server for the thing died many years ago and the oldest mac I
currently have is an iMac G3. I am trying to get the IIGS to see the
network shares on the iMac but so far I've not had any luck. I have
one of the Ansante Localtalk to Ethernet bridge devices which I used
to use with the PowerMac and the GS so I know that all works but so
far I can't seem to get the GS to see the G3 or find out if it is even
possible to use appleshare between these 2 machines. The G3 can run
Mac OS 9.1 to 10.4 and if I read the google right OS X is out of the
running so I've tried sticking with OS 9 but still no luck. The
machine currently is running 9.2.2 and the restore disk I have has 9.1
on it so I could try with 9.1 but I haven't done this yet. Here's what
I've tried so far:

- Enabled file sharing in the G3
- Installed the Localtalk bridge software on the G3 (Do I even need
this since the G3 doesn't have the traditional serial ports)
- Appletalk is active on the ethernet port on the G3

Try clearing your PRAM. I had a similar problem with my beige G3 under OS 9.x and that did the trick. Also, MacOS X up to 10.3.x supports file sharing over Appletalk, 10.5.x is the last to support Appletalk printers. Other then the above G3, I have never had any problems with my IIgs talking to servers via my Shiva Fastpath 5 or via a mac running Localtalk Bridge. It was pretty neat connecting to my PC from the IIgs via PC-MacLAN, which is sadly no longer supported.
