screwed up hard disk, maybe crash???

help if you can, whenever i boot my gs now, i get defaulted to the 
"system6.0 program Launcher" and it makes some strange noises when 
loading anything from the system folder. like it's a broken record stuck 
somewhere, i'm hoping it's not permanent, but who knows, if at all 
possible i would like to avoid formatting/buying a new hard disk, did it 
crash or is it something else? btw, it's a 40 meg AE vulcan partitioned 
into 4 parts, 2 of which don't show up whenever i'm asked for volumes/at 
finder now, they did before. i've got like 5-8 free megs, so it's not 
entirely filled, my sytem folder was quite large, mostly DA's and INITS, 
thanx for any help before i initialize the whole thing.
