"SmartPort" refers to two completely different things.
1. The actual disk port, and associated protocols for communicating
with intelligent devices such as the UniDisk 3.5.
2. The firmware interface inside the Apple II.
The SmartPort firmware interface is supported by the SmartPort disk
port (slot firmware in the IIc and IIgs), and also by several other
cards including both Apple SCSI cards, the Apple II/IIc Memory
Expansion Cards (and derivatives such as the RamFactor), the UniDisk
3.5 Controller Card for the IIe (Liron), the SuperDrive controller
card, the PC Transporter, etc.
A program such as "SmartPort Commander" can be used to make arbitrary
calls to SmartPort-compatible firmware, including Apple SCSI cards.
Greg's problem is that the original Apple SCSI card doesn't support
his device.
