At least it was renamed from "comp.sys.apple" to "comp.sys.apple2" at
some point (before my time). I expect this was done because many
Mac messages were being posted here, or it was decided to split the
group from general discussion about computers made by Apple into the
specific product families.
It is unfortunate that "apple2" comes before "mac" in the alphabet, as
newcomers often scan newsgroups in alphabetic order to find an
appropriate group for posting.
It is even more unfortunate that "binaries" comes before "sys" and
"emulators", which is probably the main reason that so many
inappropriate postings are made on comp.binaries.apple2.
