ah yes, 1-d life. in 1st year university we had an assignment to write
such a program. i used the output to wallpaper my residence room. the
program had to written to allow arbitrary generation rules. i forget
the details, but i expect that neighborhood size, # neighbors to survive
and # neighbors required to be born, plus an inititial population
were the input data. of interest was that the # neighbors could be a
set of numbers, not just one value or a range.
