   As to the sound, that would indicate to me that something shorted
out somewhere, but without more info, I can't quite help. Where was
this spark, etc? 

   As to the always going into the self test, that means that the
system thinks that the Solid Apple (or second joystick button) is
always pressed down. If you have a joystick, try unplugging it. Hit
the Solid Apple key a few times to see if that's the problem.  If
you're more adventurous, open up your //e, and see if there are any
obvious faults. Check the keyboard connector, and other fun stuff.
