Sounds like a heat problem.

Do you have a Kensington System Saver or equivalent? If not, I'll try
and get one. The bad news is they are not made anymore. The good news
it is simply approximately 2 (American) inch high box that has a
muffin fan over the top air slots of the IIgs and simply blows air
from the IIgs into the monitor.

Remove the top of your IIgs and see if the problem occurs.

If so, get a "can-o-cold" from your local equivalant oz Radio Shack
and spray it on various chips until you figure out which chip(s) are
heatstroke prone.

If, not, then cover the top with "something" such as plastic until the
problem occurs and then do the, "If so,' component asap.
