It sounds like there is a damaged record in the file.

The best solution is probably to use another program that can read
AppleWorks database files and is not fussy about damaged records.  It
could then extract the data in the other records into a text file, and
that could be imported back into AppleWorks.

Which version of AppleWorks is involved?  If it is 2.1 or earlier, I
may have a program that can do just that, written by another member of
my user group.  If it is AppleWorks 3.0, I can probably modify the
program to handle the differences in the file format.
