After a few hours of usage, I'm pleased to say mine now works
with DD disks as well. More below...

This would seem to have been the case. I noticed the mechanism
was heavily covered with thick dust, which I tried my best to blow away
before I installed it. I suppose there was not only dust and gunk sticking
around the r/w head (it refused to recognize _any_ disks at first) but also
around the switch base. Adding tape over the second disk hole must have
helped by cleaning the switch with the added friction -- it's now reading
all my DD disks just fine. :-) I still have to do some further testing, but
at least this is no longer a problem.
