I have heard of drives that have been run on their sides for a while
refusing to read properly without being reformatted when turned back
again. Apparently during normal use, the drive mechanism wears in a
certain way; when on its side, this changes, so when it's turned again,
the tracks on the media aren't where the drive "expects" them to be. So
basically, if you run your drive sideways for a long period, you might
be best off to leave it that way.
