Just one point to add here: how many lines are there in the file? It
might have more lines than AppleWorks can support.
The limit is 16250 lines in AppleWorks 3.0 and later. Note that a
"line" refers to a screen line of about 78 columns - if a longer line
wraps, each wrapped line must also be counted.
Have you tried loading it into any other programs, e.g. Teach on the
IIgs, or my About program (if you have it)? There are several other
programs that can read AppleWorks files, and many more that can read
text files.

Probably just massive overhead in the conversion process, unless the
file was damaged in some way.
