Beats me.  Someone thought it was a good idea at the time.  The
argument goes something along the lines of this: "you can't use slot 3
if you want to use an 80-column card in the auxiliary slot, because the
card in slot 3 will cause the 80-column firmware to be disabled".

This completly ignores the fact that you can use a ROMless card in
slot 3, or an extended memory card in the auxilary slot (they didn't
exist when this machine was designed, though).

Yep.  You lose PAL video output and gain NTSC instead, lose the UK
character set (pound symbol), and the video will run at 60 Hz instead
of 50 Hz.

You might like to see if you can find a Platinum IIe or IIgs intead,
and use it to supplement your existing machine.
