I've discussed this same question in detail with Mr. Empson. He's been
extremely helpful and patient with me. Let me summarize what must be done:
The drive _should_ be formatted/partitioned on the Mac. Ideally, you should
create 10 32MB ProDOS partitions first, then lump the remaining into three
240MB HFS volumes. This comes out to 1040MB (perfect for my new 1080MB
Quantum Fireball- 9ms- $390 from ProDirect). The problem I'm running into
is 1) I haven't found a Mac partitioning program that lets you create
anything smaller than 50MB partitions, and 2) When I bring the drive over
to the GS, the mac_partition and macintosh partitions are visible. If I
just make one big HFS volume (MacOS), the mac_partition volume disappears,
but there still is the accompanying 512k Macintosh partition.
Oh, Mr. Empson reccomended against making one big HFS volume.
Also, if you try and use Advanced Dist Utilities (ADU), you'll need the
"MacSCSIDriver" from that "Macintosh" 512k partition I mentioned earlier.
I believe Mr. Empson is working on something for this.

Well, I'm in the same boat. GREAT prices on those Gigs nowadays, eh? :)
