There is a program, "nulib", which will do exactly what you want. The source is
on ftp.cco.caltech.edu in the ARCHIVERS directory (probably the sources 
directory also, I don't remember how I set up the links on that one), and
will compile on UNIX platforms... I believe the sciibin source is there as
well, though I'm not sure (I know I compiled sciibin a while back, but I
don't remember whether I got the source from my own archive or not... I'm
pretty sure it's there)
