Well, first of all, the IIGS does not output in stereo unless you have a
stereo card installed - so it's not surprising that you don't get good sound
without a mono->stereo adapter (you should, actually, be getting sound out of
one speaker, I think). As for the other problem, it's very likely that the
jack (or the adapter) is bad, but if you get the sound working just by leaving
it half-plugged-in, that should be OK. I wouldn't expect much from unamplified
speakers in any event, since the IIGS doesn't output very powerful sound on
its own... :)
