  You should be asking why Apple only supports Apple-Brand peripherals
in the operating system. In this case, MacOS ONLY works with
Apple-Brand CD-ROM drives (out of the box).  I can't count how
many CD drives Win '95 works with (out of the box).
  That device drivers are "extensions" shows part of the bulging
seams of the Mac's OS architecture.
