Oops, your ignorance is showing again!
If you spent any time at all learning how to use the hardware that is in front of you, you'd know
how to turn off all extensions except for the CD-ROM driver. It's simple: you use the Extensions
Manager and turn everything else off, run the installer CD-ROM, and then turn everything back
on when you're done.
It doesn't surprise me that MS would leave this out of their instructions. Just like they left out
the key phrases "system crashes" and "extremely buggy" out of their hype of Windoze 95.
