BASIC was created at Dartmouth College (Univ?) in 1966. It was an
interpreted form of Fortran and Algol used to introduce computer
programming. Because of its tiny size and ease of use, it quickly became
the standard built-in language on most home computers. It wasn't until
much later that Microsoft wrote AppleSoft and continued on to create
their own Microsoft BASIC and started porting it to different
computers.
