Various configuration files can be had via anonymous ftp to:
ftp://galadriel.ecaetc.ohio-state.edu/pub/metal/configs

I would *highly* recommend you consult those. If not look for more
help over on alt.bbs.metal.

As far as joining the futurenet network goes, here's how to go about it, IMHO:

1. Get metal/FV working.
2. Browse the futurenet sites list, and look for a site which you would
    be willing to call. Email the sysop - ask 'em if you could connect to 
    his/her bbs. I'll post the latest to alt.bbs.metal if needed.
3. AFTER KANSASfest post on alt.bbs.metal about *exactly* what you must
    provide in order to join the network.  There is an auto-matic address
    which will give you this information back, via email, but I don't have it
    handy.
4. Then send the information to root@space-bar.fnet.org....
