Philip,

You're doing the right thing AFAIK. You shouldn't be able to "cook" the
TV ... the Apple's output is regulated (even with the pot' turned all the
way up) and there *should* be protection circuits in the television.

Is the colour burst problem during TEXT, HI-Res, or LO-Res Graphics? If
it's TEXT you need to know if you have a an early (Rev 0) motherboard --
they didn't turn off the colour burst signal on B&W text display -- or a
later board which *should* disable the colour burst signal.

If you're getting colour 'flashes' during graphics displays there's a
possibility that something is "broke". I'd try some electronic grade
cleaner on the potentiometer *and* on the variable capacitor near by. A
little dirt in them could be causing intermittent "flashes".

There's a good book (if you can find a copy) for maintaining/repairing
Apple ][ and Apple //e series computers.

_Apple II Plus/IIe Troubleshooting & Repair Guide_ by Robert C. Brenner
published by Howard W. Sams & Co. ISBN 0-672-22353-8.
