Connecting Apple II+ to TV

I've just resurrected my II+ for the kids. I'm trying to connect it to my
television. In the old days, when there were dials and knobs on the TV, I
had no problem hooking it up. But these newer "electronic" TV's...

I tried to take the video out from the Apple and put it into LINE 1 input
on the TV. Seemed to work okay, but I was getting "color bursts" (for lack
of another term), and I tuned the potentiometer a bit and it seemed better.
Now I'm getting periodic flashes, but it returns to normal soon enough.

Am I overloading the LINE (voltage)? I had first tried the adapter for TV
but had worse luck. Any help, before I cook the Apple or my TV?
