Hi all --
Thanks for the suggestions...in fact, the problems with the machine are 
not lack of juice.  I *did* get it up and running by just letting it rest 
and trying again a few days later.  :)  It seems that the drive is rather 
fussy, though.  I had the computer working, then one evening I started 
getting "Drive Error" or a similar error.  So I'm letting it rest again.  
The previous owner (my brother) mentioned that the drive was always 
somewhat unreliable.
