program conversion

Far from an experienced hacker, I thought I'd just throw out an
idea that was floating around in my head.
It is my understanding that all an emulator does is read codes
and commands from another OS and converts it to something that the native
computer can handle. Wouldn't it be possible to simply save those
transolated instruction, and have a perminent conversion of the program
you're emulating. I've heard that a mac emulator on the IIGS would be
too slow, but if you could perminantly convert the program, wouldn't it work?
I know this would probably be illegal for commertial programs,
but it would be fine for programs writen for the mac in public domain
wouldn't it.

		Just a thought.
