Typical throughput without compression should be 1200 to 1400 cps.
If you have a connection to a data compressing modem, you could expect at
least twice that figure with uncompressed data. Compressed files,
however, would suffer speedwise if the modems tried to compress/decompress
them, so they are detected by the hardware compression scheme and sent on
without further compression.
To get the higher rates on uncompressed data, you have to have
your serial port speed set at least to at least 38400. Whether you can do
this or not depends on what type Apple II you are using. A GS using one
of the big three comm programs can attain up to 57600 port speed using the
modem port or even higher with a Super Serial Card and Turbo baud rate
generator add-on. The same is possible with a IIe using that hardware
combination. I believe, however, that a IIc can do only 9600 at best.
Someone here will correct me, I'm sure, if I am wrong about the IIc.
