well, got my card today (just returned from vaction and it was waiting 
for me.) 
pulled the case apart, moved the zipgs jumper cable, and put it all back 
together.
boy does my old monitor wig out though! it sort of displays the screen 
twice, side by each, with a bit lost off the edges (sure is strange 
seeing TWO mouse cursors.) the combination also generates a terrible 
whine from the stereo. oh well, no big deal. (btw, this monitor is an old 
telidon terminal with some extra sync curcuits added.)

the image is quite acceptable with the vga monitor, though. sure is neat 
to see large, detailed, colourful images. i suppose a 17" monitor is 
kinda overkill, but it's what was available. i'm quite pleased with the 
card so far. now its time to try all the things that don't work and see 
what happens...
