Maybe my post wasn't complete enough. Here is the situation once more
in greater detail:

A friend deleted an honest-to-god device (cause he was dumb or
whatever), from ID2. From that point on no amount of boots/power cycles
brought it back. It was only when he changed the SCSI ID to ID3 that
the device showed up.

The question is, what should he have done to bring back the ID2?
