Help with //e and modem

I'm having problems using a modem with my //e. Everytime I try to get online,
the program I'm using hangs up and I end up seeing a line or two of
machine code.  I originally noticed this while using an Avatex 1200hc w/SSC II
and ASCII Express.  I thought this was due to the Serial Card or the software
but I noticed the same thing when I attempted to use an Apple-Cat with, both,
AE and Com-Ware.  I've never had this kind of problem before until I returned
to telecomputing a few months ago.

I suspect the culprit may be my phone line, but I have relatively few problems
when getting online with a different system. 


I've also used an old RS modem3 (300 baud) and I've gotten the same results. 
Could there be something wrong with my computer?  I hope not.  I don't get any
messages when I perform the self diagnostics but noone knows how reliable that
is.
