LocalTalk Network, ProTERM, printing

I have a simple LocalTalk network set up between my Apple IIGS and
mac IIsi. On the IIGS, I have a modem in the modem port, and the
network cable (printer cable, actually) in the printer port. On the
IIsi, I have the network cable in the printer port, as it must be (damn
inflexible macs). Two questions:

1) When I run ProTERM on the IIGS (ProTERM configured for no printer),
it cannot access the shared mac drive. This is to be expected, I
guess, since it's a P8 program. However, when I quit ProTERM, from
then on, the network is infinitely slow! It takes 5-10 minutes
just to get the drive's directory. Why?

2) What sucks about this setup is that I can't print. I have one of
those switchboxes so that my IIGS and IIsi can share the printer.
Can I flip it around and have the mac connected to *both* the IIGS
and the printer, so I can switch between the network and the printer?
Doesn't seem likely, but it's worth a shot.

Thanks for your time...
