Missing folders

I am running sys 7.5.1 on am MacIIfx with 16 megs of ram.

I am having a problem in that folders on my desktop are going away(
becoming invisible.  

The folders appear when I take a shot of the desktop and print it. IE
command-shift-3 then print the picture.

using find file the dialog box shows the folders I search for.

Please let me know how to get this folders back on the desktop.
