"FDHD" stands for "Floppy Drive (or Disk) High Density".  The drive is
more commonly known as the "SuperDrive".

The SuperDrive is basically a souped-up version of the Apple 3.5
Drive.  If you have a 3.5" disk controller that works with an Apple
3.5 Drive, it will also work with a SuperDrive, but the new features
of the SuperDrive will not be available.

The only way to take full advantage of a SuperDrive on a IIe or IIgs
is to use Apple's SuperDrive controller card (official name is the
"Apple 3.5 Disk Controller Card").  This card requires a IIgs or
enhanced IIe.

Note: the "Liron" card for the IIe only supports the UniDisk 3.5.  It
doesn't work with the Apple 3.5 Drive or the SuperDrive.  Similarly,
the IIc does not support an Apple 3.5 Drive or SuperDrive.

The IIc+ does support the Apple 3.5 Drive, and can therefore use a
SuperDrive as an Apple 3.5 Drive, but does not have access to the
extra features of the SuperDrive.

The extra features of the SuperDrive are: it can access MFM disk formats
(used on the PC), i.e. 720k and 1.44MB, and can use high density disks
(1.44MB format).  This allows access to high density Macintosh and
ProDOS disks, as well as MS-DOS disks (given appropriate software).
