softcard

I'm helping my local school district piece together some donated
equipment and have some AppleII boards, but I've never used an AppleII.
  
I've got a board that is labeled Microsoft Softcard. It has a Z80 on
it so I assume it will allow the AppleII to run CPM. Is this correct?
If so how does one switch to the card. Is this worth the effort? From 
the FAQ, I don't think I'll be able to download software since I don't 
have any modems and I don't recognize anything as a serial card.
