Probably, the contacts between the chips and sockets were tarnished. 
Re-seating the chips cleaned the contacts by friction. Another 
possibility is that a bad solder joint exists, and that flexing, pulling, 
and pushing polished the contact between the component and the circuit 
board. You might detect that by using a high-power magnifier to examine 
the solder connections.

But, if it is working now, it might be best to not mess with it.
