Here are several things you can try:

Try changing the order of your harddrive SCSI ID and your CD-ROM
SCSI ID. For example:

Currently:	Change to:
=========	==========
  2 6 Hard drive
  6 2 CD-ROM drive

Sometimes I have found that changing the order of removable devices
on the SCSI ID 'list' will help. Also, you may be having either cable
problems AND/OR termination problems. Many times I have had flaky
behavior with my SCSI devices and it has turned out to be poor cables
or poor terminators. If both devices (Hard drive and CD-ROM) have the
option to turn on/off termination and you have routinely used one of
the devices for termination (at the end of your SCSI chain) then you
may want to try changing the physical location of your devices and use
the other device at the end of the SCSI chain and set its termination
to ON.

What ROM version is your RamFAST? If it is 2.X.X you may want to upgrade
it to the current ROM version 3.0.1ez (I believe) this ROM costs about
$15 from Sequential Systems and takes care of a lot of problems involving
SCSI removable media devices. Give them a call if this is the case.

If you can get a hold of another set of SCSI cables and/or another
terminator try these as well.

Good luck, flaky SCSI problems can be a headache to figure out.
