Well, let's say that some people love to make their life tough. Why limit 
yourself at 14.4k when you can go at 19.2k and maybe more. 

What I do is I connect the GS via Null Modem with a 8$ null modem plug 
and the modems wires from the PC and the GS. you just use the null modem 
as a bridge between the cable form the GS and the PC. 

Then when the GS is connect via null modem, you  just have to start your 
favorites telecom programs on both machine and send/receive your data 
with zmodem.

You may try the fastest connection your machines can makes, me, I can't 
go faster than 19.2k because of my 8250 UART chip on the PC.

To resume: the only thing you have to do is to put a null modem converter 
between the PC to modem and the IIGS to modem cables. You can get one a you 
local computer store or at Radio Shack. Ask for a female to female connector.
