The Apple IIgs was the first Apple II produced with a platinum
(or grey as some see it) case design. In fact, it was the very _first_
computer made by Apple that used the platinum color scheme. This was in
September 1986, a few months after the Macintosh Plus was introduced,
which at that time Macs were still beige colored.
Moving ahead a year later, in 1987, Apple introduced the platinum
Apple IIe (aside from case color, mostly minor changes: new keyboard, metal
ID plates replaced with printed font, reduction of some ICs on motherboard,
shift-key mod and 128k standard, etc). Sometime in between the IIgs and
platinum IIe, the Apple //c's color scheme had also changed to platinum
from a previous snow-white color. I believe a memory expansion socket was
added around this time as well (IIc ROM revision 3).
