Even the FTP program doesn't directly use the FTP transfer protocol.
It starts up a second FTP connection to the remote machine to do the
transfer, while the original connection (for commands) remains open.

The grind BBS will be doing the same operation.  As long as your host
has the FTP daemon running (i.e. can accept incoming FTP connections),
this should work.

The same principle applies with WWW.
