I did this once; the trick is not to connect either modem to a phone
line at all (otherwise the dial tone will get in the way). Just
connect the modems head-to-head using a phone cable, and put one modem
in auto-answer mode ("ATA", I think). Instead of making the other
modem dial, you make it go directly to the retrain sequence using
"ATO", "ATO1", or something -- in any case there is a way to connect
without dialing.
