GS with Newton

Does anyone have much experience in using a GS with a Newton, without an
intervening Mac and LocalTalk Network? My wife has just bought a Newton,
we don't have a Mac, and while she is in no rush to do much but find out
how the Newton works, I'd like to start sorting out connection issues with
the GS, if such is possible.
If not, I guess we'll be looking for a cheap SE or similar in 6 months time.
Any help or information much appreciated.
