"Apple 5.25 Drive"s will work from the smartport.  "Disk II" drives will not.
Your subject line said "Disk II" and your message body said "Apple II 5.25
Disk Drive"--so I'm not sure which you're talking about.

The ones that will work have platinum- or beige-colored fronts.  The ones
that won't work (Disk II) are black on the front.  Also, Disk II drives say "
Disk II" on the front; Apple 5.25 Drives don't have anything but the Apple
logo on the front.

If, indeed, you are talking about the Disk II, you'll need a controller card.
