Midi Interface/Music File Format Question

Hello All:

I recently built a AppleSerialPort <-> MIDI interface based on a schematic
by Dale W. King.  The interface works just fine with Synthlab, but
unfortunately, Music Studio 2.0 doesn't recognize that an interface is there.
The documentaion claims that Music Studio is looking for the Apple Interface.

Does anyone know how the Apple MIDI Interface identifies itself?
Does anyone know how the Music Studio software queries for the Apple MIDI?

I want to do MIDI in and out and be able to edit the music on a standard
musical staff.  I have Music Studio 2.0, but have already described the
problem that it won't recognize this home-made interface.  What other programs
are out there that will do what I want?  Are they freeware/shareware?

How about a program that will do data conversion between SynthLab and 
the Music Studio?  That way I could do input/output with SynthLab and then
convert it to Muisc Stuio format to edit.

Finally, does anyone have the file specifications for Synthlab and Music
Studio?  I might be able to write a translator program if I had the info.
