Internal Floppy on the Apple IIe?  New one to me!

But no.. the floppy uses an entirely different protocol from any 
serial device - you'll need either an internal modem or a serial card.
And the cable is different too - if I understand my cable, it's straight
through - pin one goes to pin one, etc.  Modem cables don't do that.

As for software - I'm sure just about anything youmight want is
available at ftp.cco.caltech.edu.  Or you can sign onto one of the
online services.. DELPHI, for instance, has a fair number of commsp
programs you can choose between.
